It's No Surprise

The meta-crisis slipped out when everyone was asleep.

He'd already told them both he was leaving, but he didn't want to upset the Master any further by dragging out a goodbye. He slipped out of bed, giving the sleeping Time Lord a kiss that was barely even there. He didn't bring much with him, just shoving a knife into the back pocket of his dirty denim jeans and working on a plain red t-shirt with something of a grimace. He wasn't fully healed yet, anyway. The TARDIS hummed softly as he stepped out into the console room. Handy hesitated a moment before giving the console an affectionate pat before opening the door and letting himself out quietly.

He was quietly relieved that her door opened for him. After all, the Doctor had insisted he stay until he was fully healed and he was clearly...not. He supposed she understood that he just couldn't stand being there any longer.

With a sigh, the meta-crisis faced the lush tropics before him. It was daylight out here, and far too hot, in his opinion. He'd been outside for a grand total of five minutes before he started to sweat like a pig. If only they'd been on a tolerable planet. He could stand spending the rest of his life on a planet like Earth, after all. This was just ridiculous.

He pushed through the thick leaves, setting out through the jungle. To his annoyance, it was impossible to get anywhere without leaving an obvious path. He just hoped that the Doctor could accept his decision and leave him alone instead of following him, though he doubted the idiot could manage that. Serves him right, it's his fault I'm leaving, he thought sourly.

After about an hour of trekking through the hot jungle, it started to rain. Thick, hot drops of moisture trickled down from the trees, effectively soaking Handy through. He scowled at the canopy above him but kept going. Nothing more fun than hiking in wet jeans, after all.

God, this was hell.

He couldn't take it after a few more hours of this, and finally decided to make some kind of shelter. Wet and miserable, he cut a few of the enormous leaves off and lashed them to a tree, building himself a roof. He huddled beneath it and sighed, pushing his sopping mop of hair out of his eyes. His chest was starting to throb again but he ignored it, leaning his head back against the tree and closing his eyes. Maybe he could take a quick nap...

He'd never been a heavy sleeper, and a shadow falling over him was all it took to wake him again. His eyes fluttered open and he blinked in surprise, shrinking back slightly as he took in the enormous native in front of him. Seven feet tall, shimmering green skin, and angry red eyes, the giant stared down at him. He swallowed nervously, scrambling to his feet.

"Just when I was starting to think this planet was uninhabited." He laughed nervously. "Hullo, I'm John. Or Handy, if you prefer...that..."

He trailed off as the creature leered down at him. "You are just in time for the feast!" it boomed, the surprisingly loud voice making him jump back in surprise.

"Feast?" This could either be a very good thing, or a very bad thing...

The feathered dart in his neck told him it was the latter.

When he came to again, the first thing he noticed was that his hands were bound behind him and he was locked in a tiny cage built of what appeared to be bones. He shuddered, shrinking to the back of the cage as he tried to get his mind to start working again through the drugged haze.

He thought he'd been hot before, but now this was just plain ridiculous. He realized with a shock of horror that he was in the midst of an entire tribe of the green creatures, and they were building the largest fire he'd ever seen.

Oh no.
